For more than 35 years, Towne Square has been a familiar gathering place in the heart of downtown Oakville. This fall, the landmark space is set to begin its next chapter.
The Town of Oakville is moving forward with a $7.5 million revitalization of Towne Square, with construction scheduled to begin the week of September 14, 2026. The project is designed to create a greener, more accessible and welcoming public space while preserving the character that has long made the square an important part of downtown.
Plans include additional seating, new trees along three sides of the square, an updated central lawn, a distinctive water feature, improved paving, lighting and furnishings, as well as accessibility improvements throughout. The familiar Towne Square clock will be temporarily removed and stored during construction before returning to the completed square.
Construction will take place in phases to help maintain access to downtown businesses, residences and community events. The first phase is scheduled from September through November 2026, followed by a pause over the holiday season. Work is expected to resume in early 2027, with the second phase currently scheduled through mid-September 2027. The annual Holiday Tree Lighting will also remain at Towne Square for the 2026 season.
For those who live, work and spend time downtown, the revitalization represents an investment in one of Oakville's most recognizable public spaces. The goal is not simply to update the square, but to create more opportunities for people to gather, attend community events and enjoy the downtown core for years to come.
