The fight to save Glen Abbey Golf Course and protect it from destruction continues as Oakville residents attended the Town Hall talk that was set to discuss the fate of the beloved green space.
Although many individuals would love to take part in meetings regarding the Glen Abbey Golf Course, the truth is that only a handful can do so because the meetings are held during weekdays, shared Fraser Damoff, Save Glen Abbey Coalition spokesperson regarding the April 27 pre-hearing.

The meeting’s purpose is to appeal to ClubLink, owner of the famous Canadian Golf course to perhaps change their mind regarding their proposal to turn Glen Abbey Golf Course into an area with retail space, offices, and about 3,200 residential units which isn’t supported by most locals.
ClubLink is trying to appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) to reconsider the Town Council’s September 2017 decision that refused ClubLink’s development application.
People attending pre-hearings carries more weight than what is readily obvious because the proposed redevelopment of the Glen Abbey Golf Course will have a huge impact on a lot of people and not just those residing in Oakville, adds Damoff.
Cultural Heritage Landscape
Town Council designated Glen Abbey Golf Course as a cultural heritage landscape on December 20, 2017 after reviewing documents submitted by golf historians, heritage experts, community members, and town staff as evidence of the golf course’s significant heritage value. Designation as a cultural heritage landscape means that future modifications to the site must consider the conservation of the Glen Abbey cultural heritage landscape and must not interfere with the maintenance and operations of the golf course.
Following the above, ClubLink vice president Robert Visentin voiced out that the designation was only made to oppose their proposed real estate development. It is to be noted that majority of the club property is owned by the Morguard Corp. by property developer Raj Sahj.
Other Concerns
Damoff, who’s also running for council in October, stated that he and fellow residents are concerned that the proposed redevelopment could heavily impact future traffic and local economics; and because this wasn’t part of the plan when the town came to be, that the effect would be detrimental to the entire town. He added that Kerr Village (located just south of Glen Abbey) is willing and ready to face this kind of development.
Worldwide Support
The petition for the Save Glen Abbey Coalition has more than 10,000 signatures from all over the world at present time, particularly those who are fans of the Canadian Open. Hearings will begin in the middle of July this year.
